Blankets for Oklahoma

May 24th, 2013

Hi everyone,

Just as I have been writing in the past few posts, what we crafters do when something bad has happened is: try to use our crafting skills to help out those who have been harmed.  Well, here we are in tornado season again and Moore, Oklahoma has been hit hard.  I’m sure I don’t have to go into the details, as the photos and stories have been all over the news.  So, what are we going to do?  We’re going to do the same thing we did almost exactly two years ago for Joplin, MO: we’re going to make blankets.  There is a store in Tulsa, OK that has agreed to accept our donations and see to getting them distributed.  You guys were awesome the last time around and I’d like to see us make even more squares this time.

The details are as follows:

What we are asking for from you is as many washable knitted or crocheted 8″ x 8″ squares as you can spare.  Please have them here by Sunday June 9th, and please include your name with your squares — we want to put everyone’s name on a card with these blankets.

Bring your squares in to the store and we will gather here to sew them together at two different sewing parties.  Our sewing parties will be on Sunday June 9th from 12 – 5 pm and Thursday June 13th from 6pm – 9pm.  We’ll provide some snacks — feel free to bring something to share.

If you have extra washable yarn, please feel free to drop it by the store to be used by someone else to make a square.  As always, you should also feel free to gather here to create these squares.  Windy Knitty will be donating yarn to the project as well.

We know we can count on all of you to help out with this.  Hopefully we can send some comfort and love to people who see devastation everywhere around them.

Thanks,
Your friends at Windy Knitty

Update on Blankets

June 29th, 2011

How awesome are you all?  Let me count the ways….  Maybe I should just use a photo to show you.

Blankets and socks made and donated for Joplin, MO

I don’t know how well you can tell from the photo, but let me tell you that what you are looking at: 8 — EIGHT — new blankets that were made by you all.  When I put this request out, I thought that maybe we’d get 2 or 3, not 8!!  On top of the blankets are 7 pairs of handknit socks, too.

Well done, everyone.  I can’t wait to send them off to the people who were hit by this incredible tornado.  I hope so much that the people who receive them feel the love and good wishes that went into their making.

Blankets for Missouri

May 27th, 2011

How this got started

Last night, while complaining for the umpteenth time about the weather, one of the people at our weekly gathering of fiber folks reminded me that the crummy weather that we were experiencing here in Chicago was just the tip of what the people in Missouri and other places were experiencing in the forms of tornadoes and flooding.  That was enough to get my head right and to make me share the thought I’d had earlier: maybe we should do something for the folks in Missouri.  Knitters and crocheters are notorious for doing things for individuals in need when disaster strikes, so why not us?  I was so impressed by the response that I got.  Without blinking an eye, they all basically said, “I’m in.”

The two people who happened to know folks who are on the scene in Joplin as I write this, offered to contact those individuals to find out where we could send our hand-crafted items.  The rest of us started scheming as to what would be appropriate to send and how we’d arrange things to both have enough time to craft something and yet have a fast enough turnaround time to get the items there while the situation was still most critical.  That was how we decided that 32″ x 32″ blankets made of 8″ x 8″ squares were the way to go.  This choice allows people who have enough time to craft an entire blanket’s worth of squares to do so, or those who only have time to make one square could contribute as well.

If you’re interested in joining us in this effort, but did not get the email that was sent out earlier, here are the details of the planned project:

Details:

What we are asking for from you is as many washable knitted or crocheted 8″ x 8″ squares as you can spare.  Please have them here by Sunday June 12th.

This can be a stash buster for you that just happens to be going to a really good cause!  The only requirement that we have regarding the yarn is that it be washable.  Bring your squares in to the store and we will gather here to sew them together at two different sewing parties.  Our sewing parties will be on Thursday June 16th from 6pm – 9pm and Sunday June 19th from 12pm – 5pm.  Come to work on the sewing and enjoy snacks, drinks, and comraderie.

If you have extra (washable) yarn, please feel free to drop it by the store to be used by someone else to make a square.  For that matter, you should feel free to gather here to create these squares.  Windy Knitty will be donating yarn to the project as well.

We look forward to working on this project with you all.

Sincerely,
Mandy and the other folks who instantly got right on board with, and encouraged, this idea.
